A broken (also known as a “fractured”) ankle can affect the ankle joint and lead to post-traumatic arthritis and pain. Surgery to repair an ankle fracture aims to restore the pre-fracture position of the joint and reduce the long-term effects of arthritis. Not all fractures require surgery, but it is important to monitor them closely to insure the bone is healing appropriately.
